The Kindergarten Mathematics Syllabus is quite simple in many states or countries, but I like to push my kids and students to do better than required.
Hence, you might find my approach difficult but trust me it will work wonders and your kids will find it really easy to adjust to primary school or grade one after graduating preschool.
In this blog post, we will be discussing the whole mathematics syllabus for kindergarten that will be covered in two terms named midterm and final term.
After every term you will be taking exams or final assessments from your student or kids.
Gemini Home School will not only upload books, workbooks or worksheets for preschool and kindergarten, but we will also be providing you parents and teachers with final assessments and exams for kindergarten on our website.
Let’s begin this blog post!

Reading Syllabus For Mathematics (Midterm)
In the reading syllabus, the kids will be learning how to read the numbers counting forward from one till one hundred and fifty.
Not just that, they will also be revising the concepts of matching the same numbers, counting and selecting the right option, filling the missing numbers up to 150, verbal backwards counting from fifty till zero.
All of the mathematics concepts will be taught verbally in lectures to them using whiteboard and then they will move to the oral and written practice of the concepts.
They will also learn the concepts of addition and subtraction as worksheets and verbal understanding using the whiteboard and lecture methods by the teacher.
Now addition and subtraction can come in various techniques that are now taught to the kindergartners, these are explained briefly below:
Addition
- In addition, there are several concepts with the first one being, count the pictures or objects together and write the total count number in the given blank.
- After those kids get to learn adding the single- and double-digits sums, where you will teach them to draw lines for each number in the sum and then count these lines together when it is about single digit addition, but for double digit addition, you need to let the kids know that they should be adding the numbers on the right first always. Trust me this is so easy to teach and they learn the concept really quickly.
- Then come the statement addition questions where you will use simple statements where two people are buying same things and then they need to count these together and write the total count as an answer.
- No one can ignore the addition method using the number line. based on the teacher’s lecture on white board, you can easily tell your students to make curved lines till the number written above in the sum question and then count the second number forward from the number which was the first digit. It is really easy and will make it more fun if you will ask each kid to come and solve them on the whiteboard.
- Then the last but not the least method is using the square method where you will provide your students with a square having some sums mentioned with some missing numbers and answers written next to the square. This can be solved on the board to teach the kids easily. I will be posting a dedicated blog post on methods of teaching addition to Kindergartners using different methods, there you will get to learn all these methods and not just that you will also get YouTube videos soon.
Subtraction
Just like addition, subtraction also comes in variety of different ways to teach. Kindergarteners get to learn subtraction in five different ways, those are briefly listed below:
- First of all, they will learn to subtract one number from the other by using different objects and then asking them to take away some of those and counting the remaining to get an answer.
- Once they are familiar with the rules of taking away using images or objects, then they will be moved to doing addition and subtraction using lines method. Here you will write down actual subtraction sums using numbers only. Then you will ask them to draw lines for the number which is biggest or written at top in the sum and then ask them to cross the number of lines equal to the number given below the top or biggest number and then count the remaining lines to get their answer and write it down in the blank space given below the sum.
- Third method is the statement method of subtraction, where you will only need to help them to read the statement and then ask them to write the biggest number at the top and smallest number below it, then add the subtraction sign and make a line underneath both numbers and then solve it as explained in the point number two explained above.
- The fourth method is the number line method. Where they will go to the biggest or the top number on the number line and then jump back as many times as mentioned in the number below the biggest digit of subtraction sum. Then the number where they will reach after jumping back to the left will be the answer.
- The last but not the least method will be squares method. Here the kids will learn to draw as many squares as equal to the biggest number of the subtraction sum. Then they will color the squares equal to the smaller number of the given question sum and then when they will count the uncolored squares, they will have their answers.
The addition and subtraction have ended here. I am sure you must have gotten an idea by reading them, but if you are still finding it difficult, do not worry because Gemini Home School will soon be posting Kindergarten Mathematics Worksheets on its website free of cost for you all.
And no, the concepts do not end here, they will also learn what tables are and learn the table of two and three.
They will also learn the concept of counting in words and cover the spellings from number one till fifty.
Kindergartners will also learn and revise the concepts of shapes again in their midterm syllabus.
The kindergartners will already have an idea of most of these concepts from nursery; therefore, it will come really easy to their minds. Because they know it all, it is just getting a little more complex and in an expanded form than nursery.
They will be made to understand that they should be able to read questions on their own and then answer accordingly.
I will mention here again that, although most of the mathematics syllabus is all about writing and practice, it does require that the kids can read the questions or read the numbers and understand what they need to do in order to give answers verbally or in writing.
Writing Syllabus For Mathematics (Midterm)
All the concepts that have been mentioned above will be practiced by writing on notebooks, worksheets and activity curriculum books.
I will recommend you guys to go for buying First Steps To Early Years (Level 3) book by Oxford University Press for your children. With this book, you will not need to worry a lot because here your kids will get all the mentioned activities that they can solve having all the fun in the world.
Along with this book, you can use our worksheets and then use notebooks for activities like counting in words, writing numbers from 1 to 150, writing down tables and backward counting etc.
Oral Syllabus For Mathematics (Midterm)
Now as I mentioned earlier, the kids do not get to take lectures for concepts building only, they will be doing written practice and oral learning as well.
The kids should be able to verbally or orally tell the tables of three and two without any fumbling.
They should be able to verbally or orally count from one till one hundred and fifty. They should also be able to count backwards orally from fifty till one.
Not only this they should be able to orally tell the spellings of counting from one till fifty.
Your students or child should also be able to explain what is addition and subtraction orally and they should be able to briefly explain each type of addition or subtraction.
Mathematics Syllabus For Kindergarten (Final Term)
Final term mathematics syllabus for kindergarten will also be divided into three parts and the final term syllabus will follow the same pattern as of the midterm mathematics syllabus for kindergarten.
It will have three parts telling what the kids will be doing in reading, writing or oral learning.

Reading Syllabus For Mathematics (Midterm)
The reading syllabus is nothing different than the midterm syllabus. All the concepts of midterm will be revised again and will be the part of final assessments or exams as well.
The only difference will be that the concepts will be extended more than the midterm.
Table of four and five will be added to the syllabus, match and circle the right answer, fill in the missing numbers till 200 rather than 150.
So forward counting will start from one and go till two hundred. Backward counting will now be from one hundred till one. And the counting in words will now go from one till one hundred.
The subtraction and addition will be revised again but it will not include the concept of borrowing in the final term too and kids will opt for simple single- and double-digit addition and subtraction using five different techniques for each.
New concepts will be taught and added to the old concepts in the final term syllabus. These new syllabus concepts will include:
- Concept of skip counting with 2s, 5s and 10s difference. I will upload YouTube video mentioning the activities that you can include as a play to teach them skip counting.
- Table of four and five.
- 3-D shapes concept and worksheets including video lectures from YouTube to reinforce concepts more firmly.
- Concept of currency of their specific country.
- Grouping and counting in groups. For example, if there are three groups of 5 monkeys, how many monkeys each group has, or divide fifteen monkeys into equal numbers and create groups and then tell how many groups did you make to equally divide them etc.
Writing Syllabus For Mathematics (Midterm)
Writing syllabus pattern will be similar to the midterm writing syllabus of mathematics for kindergarten.
They will solve curriculum book’s activities, write down on their notebooks (Writing material same as of midterm concepts mentioned to be written in notebooks) and solving worksheets for kindergarten mathematics for final term uploaded by Gemini Home School.
Oral Syllabus For Mathematics (Midterm)
Just like midterm, the kids should be able to verbally or orally tell the tables of two, three, four and five without any fumbling.
They should be able to verbally or orally count from one till two hundred. They should also be able to count backwards orally from hundred till one.
Not only this they should be able to orally tell the spellings of counting from one till hundred.
Kindergarten students or child should also be able to explain what is addition and subtraction orally and they should be able to briefly explain each type of addition or subtraction.
In the final term, they should also be able to orally explain concept of skip counting, currency and 3-D shapes and they should be able to orally identify currency and 3-D shapes by looking at them in pictures or having a look at the shapes models or currency notes directly.
With this last point the whole syllabus of Mathematics for Kindergarten has ended. I am sure it was easy to understand for you teachers and parents.
End Note
Please do understand that all the syllabus mentioned in the preschool grades or levels is not only applicable for neuro typical students, but it is very much same for special needs children, especially autistic children.
You cannot imagine how easily autistic kids go through this syllabus. You may require some time with building the stamina of your kid, but if you are following our curriculum and syllabus from Playgroup till Kindergarten, you will be amazed to see that your special needs or autistic child or student will not only be able to learn, read and write but will also be able to appear in the exams and assessments and clear these grade levels without any issue.
